The
Latest Open source Operating System.
2.1 Meaning
of open source Os
Open source
operating software is a software
that is free to use and which provides the original source code used to
create it so that users can modify and containing a set of program or instructions that coordinate
all the activities among computer hardware devices.
2.2 Example of open source
OS.
Two example of open source software :
·
Linux is a Unix-like
computer operating system assembled under the model of free and open source software
development and distribution. The defining component of Linux is the Linux
kernel, an operating system kernel .Linux was
originally developed as a free operating system for Intel x86-based
personal computers. It has since been ported to more
computer hardware platforms than any other operating system.
·
It is a leading operating system on servers and other big iron
systems such as mainframe computers and supercomputers more than 90% of today's 500 fastest
supercomputers run some variant of Linux, including the 10 fastest.
·
Linux also runs on embedded systems (devices where the operating system is typically built into the firmware and highly tailored to the system) such as mobile phones, tablet computers, network routers, televisions and video game consoles; the Android system in wide use on mobile devices is built on the Linux kernel.
·
OpenSolaris
is an open source project created by Sun Microsystems to build a developer
community around Solaris Operating System technology. The project is aimed at
developers, system administrators, and users who want to develop and improve
operating systems. As of April 2007, over 40,000 community members are
registered on OpenSolaris.org, of whom over 11,000 are not Sun employees. An
active OpenSolaris User Group community is now growing worldwide, and dozens of
OpenSolaris technology communities and projects are being formed on
opensolaris.org.
OpenSolaris is derived from the Unix System V Release 4 codebase, although with significant modifications made by Sun since it bought out the rights to the codebase in 1994. It is the only open source System V derivative available. Open sourced components are snapshots of the latest Solaris release under development .Future versions of Solaris will be based on technology from the OpenSolaris project.

The
Latest Open Source Application Software.
3.1Meaning of open source application software.
Application
software is all programs that perform
specific tasks for users, which include wordprocessing , spreadsheet ,
database, presentation ,e-Mail , and web browser software. At the same time,
this software is free to use and users can modify original source code.
3.2 Example of open source application software.
★ GIMP is an acronym for GNU
Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks
as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.
:- It has many capabilities. It can be used as a
simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online
batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format
converter, etc.
:- GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed
to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The
advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the
most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.
:- GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. But basically the same
code also runs on MS Windows and Mac OS X.
★ Firefox (see http://www.mozilla.org/firefox/): a web client program (for viewing
and hearing web pages) available for Windows and Mac as well as Linux and other
UNIX systems.
:-
The version of the
browser to 13.0.1 for all supported operating systems. The release notes list
both the changes that Mozilla made in Firefox 13 and the three bug fixes in the
Firefox 13.0.1 release. Both Mozilla and Adobe seem to still be working on
fixes for the issues that have been caused by the Adobe Flash 11.3 upgrade. For
now, Firefox users can use workarounds . Examples of open source application software Examples of
open source application software is Mozilla Firefox. Latest version.
:-
Another examples of open source applications is Open LDAP. version is Open LDAP Version 2.4, released in October, 2007, introduced N-way Multi Master replication, Stand-by master, and the ability to delete and modify Schema elements on the fly, plus many more.

4.1Hardware.
The
latest development in ICT in hardware is Wireless Keyboard 3000. Wireless
Keyboard300 have 2.4 GHz wireless technology which confident connection out of
the box and with up to a 45-foot range. Beside that, it also have quiet-touch
keys which quiet, responsive, and thin- profile keys. It is available with
soft-touch palm rest which has some benefits like we will get better
comfortable which support when we type with the plush, integrated palm rest.
It’s spill-resistant design is integrated water channels drain the liquid away.
It also has media center which can control media playback from our keyboard.
Some hot key that it have are one-touch access to Windows Media Player, e-mail,
Home, calculator, My Documents, zoom instant messaging and photos.
Compare
with Wired Desktop 600, this keyboard have media center with four hot keys to let
we control the most-used media activities like play house, volume up, volume
down, and mute. Beside that, it also have calculator hot keys which has a
function to quickly access the calculator if we touch it’s button. It’s
spill-resistant design is use to enjoy a drink while we work. This keyboard is
designed to withstand an accidental spill. We can press to launch
our Start menu and search our PC or the Web if we have Windows Vista
installed.
4.2
Software.
The latest development in ICT in software is GNOME 2.26.The latest version of the GNOME
Desktop, a popular, multi-platform desktop environment for your computer. GNOME focus is easy to use, stability, and first class internationalisation and accessibility support. GNOME is free and open source software and provides all of the common tools computer users
expect of a modern
computing environment, such as e-mail, groupware, web browsing, file management, multimedia, and games.
Furthermore, GNOME provides
a flexible and powerful platform for software developers, both on the
desktop and in mobile application. The GNOME desktop is released every six
month and contains many
new features, improvement, bug fixes ,and
translations. GNOME 2.26 continues this tradition. GNOME 2.26 includes all of the improvements made in GNOME 2.24 and earlier.

Managing the files you delete that
are moved to the Trash has seen improvements. When viewing the Trash folder,
there is a new button in the information bar that allows you to restore
selected files. The Trash folder also shows the original location of the
deleted file and the date it was deleted
|
System
Settings now includes links
to related settings found in other locations. For instance, the Keyboard
section now has a link to the keyboard layout.
|
GNOME 2.32 includes updates to
Nautilus, the GNOME File Manager. Nautilus has added a dialog to help you
handle conflicts when performing copy or move operations. When cutting files
to paste them in another directory, Nautilus will now display the cut files
with transparent icons.
|
Notifications
in the lower-right corner now include a counter. This makes it easier to see
how many emails are waiting for you without having to open your email
program, or to determine how many messages you have missed in a particular
chat.

2.0 Pervasive Computing.
5.1 Meaning of
pervasive computing.
Pervasive computing is a post-desktop model of human-computer interaction in which
information processing has been thoroughly integrated into everyday objects and
activities. In the course of ordinary activities, someone "using" ubiquitous
computing engages many computational devices and systems simultaneously, and
may not necessarily even be aware that they are doing so. This model is usually
considered an advancement from the desktop paradigm. More formally, ubiquitous
computing is defined as "machines that fit the human environment instead
of forcing humans to enter theirs."
This paradigm is also described as pervasive
computing, ambient intelligence or, more recently, everyware,
where each term emphasizes slightly different aspects. When primarily
concerning the objects involved, it is also physical computing, the Internet of Things, haptic computing,
and things that think. Rather than propose a single definition for
ubiquitous computing and for these related terms, a taxonomy of properties for
ubiquitous computing has been proposed, from which different kinds or flavors
of ubiquitous systems and applications can be described. The idea that
technology is moving beyond the personal computer to everyday devices with embedded
technology and connectivity as computing devices become progressively smaller
and more powerful.
Also called ubiquitous computing,
pervasive computing is the result of computer technology advancing at
exponential speeds -- a trend toward all man-made and some natural products
having hardware and
software. Pervasive
computing goes beyond the realm of personal computers: it is the idea that
almost any device, from clothing to tools to appliances to cars to homes to the
human body to your coffee mug, can be imbedded with chips to connect the
device to an infinite network of other devices.
5.2 example of pervasive computing.
ASUS Eee Pad 101TC
The
Eee Pad 101TC is in some respects a whole different kettle of fish to its
bigger brother. It's not just the 10 inches of glass that follows in the IPad's
footsteps, but also the metal sleeve around the edge now. Either way, this has
become an aesthetically acceptable style and the textured backside also looks
good and adds grip, however in the early sample on show the quality of
manufacture still needs some tweaking around the edges. As for the hardware
inside, we know it's Nvidia Tegra powered - we assume and heard it was Tegra 2
- however we're waiting on confirmation from Asus on this. Apparently it has
340MB of memory to play with (we assume some is dedicated to graphics) and it
was running on Microsoft's recently announced Windows Embedded Compact 7, Build
1344, compiled on May 28 2010. Asus' own software shell then runs over the top
of this giving a smart phone style smooth and flowing, but currently limited
functional interface.
BlackBerry Curve 8520.
The slim new BlackBerry Curve 8520 is an incredibly approachable smartphone
that comes in two attractive colors - black and frost. For people who like to
be connected, it provides easy mobile access to email, messaging (IM, SMS, MMS)
and popular social networking sites (including Facebook and MySpace) and
features a highly tactile full-QWERTY keyboard for comfortable, accurate
typing. It also features rich multimedia capabilities and access to music,
games and other mobile apps for entertainment on the go.
The BlackBerry Curve 8520 smartphone is a world phone, and is also
Wi-Fi-enabled to arm customers with fast Web browsing and Wi-Fi calling.
In addition to providing the
industry's leading mobile email and messaging solution, the BlackBerry Curve 8520 smartphone is
designed to be efficient and convenient. It introduces an innovative
touch-sensitive optical trackpad, which makes scrolling and selection smooth
and easy for a great navigation experience. It is also the first BlackBerry
smartphone to feature dedicated media keys, smoothly integrated along the top
of the handset, giving customers an easy, convenient way to control their music
and videos.

Conclusion.
Open source software has natural strengths which
benefit individual users. Above and beyond this, the widespread use of open
source software holds advantages for the U.S. economy as a whole, and it is for
this reason that a careful program of government promotion and encouragement
would be justified and beneficial. The aim of the research presented I n this
thesis is to contribute to the design of CSdCL environments of good pedagogical
quality. This is approached by exploration of the research question: What are
the most crucial limitation and possibilities of Internet related to performing
collaborative activities in distributed learning situation? The research
question is primarily illuminated through the process of developing a proto type
of a CSdCL computer system and the application of this in a CSdSL situation.
