Paduka Sri Sultan Sir Abu Bakar ibni al-Marhum Dato Temenggong Sri Maharaja Tun
Ibrahim, By the grace of God, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State and
Territory of Johor, GCMG (20.3.1876), KCSI (17.9.1866). b. at Teluk
Belanga, Singapore, 3rd February 1833, eldest son of H.H. Sri Paduka
Dato Temenggong Sri Maharaja Daeng Ibrahim bin Dato Temenggong Sri Maharaja
‘Abdu’l Rahman, Maharaja of Johor, by his first wife, Encik Ngah, educ.
Keasberry’s Acad, Mount Zion, Singapore. Succeeded on the death of his father
as Dato’ Temenggong Sri Maharaja and Maharaja
of Johor, 31st January 1862. Elected by the Muar
chiefs as ruler of Muar, in succession to Sultan ‘Ali, 8th November
1877. Proclaimed a Constitution (the first in history) which introduced cabinet
government and a legislature, 14th April 1885. Assumed the
hereditary title of Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State and Territory of
Johor, 11th December 1885 (recognised by the British authorities
and granted a permanent salute of 17-guns 13th February 1886).
Crowned at Johor Bahru, 29th July 1886. Founded the Most Esteemed
Royal Family Order (Darjah Kerabat Yang Amat di-Hormati)
and the Most Honourable Order of the Crown of Johor (Darjah Mahkota
Johor Yang Amat Mulia), 31st July 1886. Rcvd:
the Prince of Wales’s Gold medal (1876), GC of the Orders of Kalakaua I of
Hawaii (26.111881), Franz Joseph of Austria (1893), the Order of the Crown of
Prussia 1stclass (23.6.1880), the Imperial Order of the Double
Dragon 1st class, 1st grade, of China (10.12.1892), the
Imperial Order of the Osmans (Nishan-i-Osmanieh) special class in
brilliants of Turkey (24.4.1893), Cdr of the Order of the Crown of Italy
(1891), and the Ducal Saxe-Ernestine House Order. m. (first) at Pahang,
June 1858, Y.A.M. Encik Wan Chik binti Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja Tun
Muhammad Tahir, Encik Puan Besar (b. 1843),
daughter of Y.A.M. Tun Muhammad Tahir bin Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja Tun
‘Ali, Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja of Pahang, by
his first wife, Y.A.M. Tunku Chik binti al-Marhum Sultan Ahmad Taj ud-din Halim
Shah, daughter of H.H. Maulana Paduka Sri Sultan Ahmad Taj ud-din Halim Shah I
ibni al-Marhum ‘Abdu’llah al-Mukarram Shah, Sultan of Kedah. m. (second)
1870, Y.A.M. Encik Zubaida binti ‘Abdu’llah, Encik Puan Besar (b.
at Badung, Bali, 25th November 1849; d. at “Sunnyside”, Johor
Bahru, 1st June 1936, bur. there at the Sultan Abu Bakar
Mausoleum, Bukit Mahmoodiah), née Cecilia Catherina Lange, daughter of Mads
Johansen Lange, Pungwa Besar of Kessiman, Knt of the Order of the
Netherlands Lion, a Danish citizen resident in Bali, by Nonya Sangnio, daughter
of the Captain China of Kuta. m. (third) at Singapore, December 1885,
Encik Che’ Puan Fatima binti ‘Abdu’llah [H.H. Sultana Fatima] (b. at Hong
Kong; d. at Singapore, 24th February 1891, bur. at the
Sultan Abu Bakar Mausoleum, Bukit Mahmoodiah, Johor Bahru), née Wong Ah Gew,
granted the title of Sultana with the style of Her Highness,
8th July 1886, a clanswoman of Wong Ah Fook, the famous Johor
Chinese entrepeneur and sometime Tuan Besar of Sungai Mersing. m.
(fourth) at Istanbul, Turkey, 22nd September 1893, Che’ Khadija Khanum
[H.H. Sultana Khadija] (d. at Woodneuk, Tanglin, Singapore, 1st February
1904, bur. there at the Temenggong Mausoleum, Teluk Belanga), crowned at
the Istana Zahra, Johor Bahru, as Sultana of Johor with
the style of Her Highness, 28th February 1894, a lady
of Turkish origin. He d. at Bailey’s Hotel, South Kensington, London, 4th
June 1895 (bur. at the Sultan Abu Bakar Mausoleum, Bukit Mahmoodiah,
Johor Bahru), having had issue, one son and four daughters:

Ampuan Besar. b. at Istana Bidadari, Serangoon, Singapore, 21st
December 1871 (d/o Encik Besar Zubaida), educ. privately. Granted
the title of Tengku Ampuan with the style of Her Highness
1914, and Tengku Ampuan Besar 1917. Presdt Johor Girl Guides
Assoc. Rcvd: DK (17.9.1950). m. at Johor Bahru, 14th September
1897, H.H. Paduka Sri Baginda Al-Sultan Mahmud Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Sir
Ahmad al-Mu’azzam Shah, Sultan of Pahang, CMG (b. 4th
February 1868; d.s.p. at Tanjung Kuala Pahang, 19th June
1917, and bur. Royal Mausoleum, Kampung Marhum), eldest surviving son of
H.H. Paduka Sri Baginda Sultan Sir Ahmad al-Mu’azzam Shah ibni al-Marhum Dato’
Bendahara Sri Maharaja Tun ‘Ali, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of
Pahang, KCMG, by his second wife, Y.M. Encik Ungku Pah binti Dato Temenggong
Sri Maharaja Tun Ibrahim, daughter of H.H. Sri Paduka Dato Temenggong Sri
Maharaja Tun Ibrahim bin Dato Temenggong Sri Maharaja Daeng ‘Abdu’l Rahman,
Maharaja of Johor. She d.s.p. at Istana Menara Empat,
Scudai, Johor Bahru, 25th October 1952 (bur. at the Sultan
Abu Bakar Mausoleum, Bukit Mahmoodiah) – see Malaysia (Pahang).

H.H. Tunku Besar Putri binti al-Marhum Sultan Sir Abu Bakar (d/o Wan
Chik). m. at Istana Zahrah, Johor Bahru, 23rd May 1894, H.H.
Ungku Chik Ahmad bin ‘Abdu’l Rahman, son of her paternal uncle, Y.M. Ungku
‘Abdu’l Rahman bin Dato’ Temenggong Sri Maharaja Tun Ibrahim, sometime MSC and
Regent of Johore. She d. Istana Sri Manggis, Johor Bahru, 9th August
1945 (bur. there at the Sultan Abu Bakar Mausoleum, Bukit Mahmudiah),
having had issue, three sons and five daughters - see above.

H.H. Tunku Aziza binti al-Marhum Sultan Sir Abu Bakar. m. as his first
wife, Major Y.B.M. Ungku ‘Abdu’l ‘Aziz bin ‘Abdu’l Majid, Ungku Sri
Paduka Sanad Mahtaja, CMG (b. 7th August
1887; d. at Haslemere, Surrey, 29th April 1951, bur.
Brookwood Cemetery, Woking, Surrey), son of her paternal uncle, Y.M. Ungku
‘Abdu’l Majid bin Dato’ Temenggong Sri Maharaja Tun Ibrahim, sometime Presdt of
the Johore State Council She d.s.p. at Johor Bahru, 27th
August 1926 (bur. there at the Sultan Abu Bakar Mausoleum, Bukit
Mahmudiah) - see above.

Zahrah, Johor Bahru, 1891 (d/o Sultana Khadija). m. Y.M. Ungku
‘Abdu’l Majid bin Muhammad (b. 3rd February 1884; d.
at Johor Bahru, 26th March 1942), actg State Cmsnr Endau 1930, rcvd:
DK, son of Y.M. Raja Chu Muhammad. She d. at the General Hospital, Johor
Bahru, 9th November 1947 (bur. there at the Sultan Abu Bakar
Mausoleum, Bukit Mahmudiah), having had issue, an only daughter.
